Athlete of Sikyon, Peloponnese
Bronze statuette of the athlete of Sikyon, a town on the northeast coast of the Peloponnese. Sikyon was at that time a commercial town with a focus on ore foundry, shoe manufacturing and ceramics production.
Probably a work from the workshop of the polyconductor. Besides Pheidias, Polykleitos was one of the leading sculptors of the High Classical period.
National Archaeological Museum Athens under the inventory number X 7474, dated 440 BC. Replica in original size made of ceramic (high-strength special gypsum) in bronze finish.
