The Satyr Oreimachos in the foreground plays a barbitos, a kind of lyre with especially long arms.

The barbitos was dedicated to the wine god Dionysos. In the right hand Oreimachos holds a string which is connected to the barbitos. At the height of the satyr's head, his name is written down diagonally. Behind him stands the messenger of the gods Hermes with a Kantharos and a Kerykeion, a herald's staff, in his left hand and a small Oinochoe in his right. He is dressed in a short tunic and chlamys, a travel coat stuck to his right shoulder, wears a hat with wings and talarion, little wings, on his boots. The characteristic features of the messenger of the gods Hermes. Above the barbitos is the name of the god. Between the two men stands a fawn with dotted fur, whose head is turned gracefully upwards.

On the left below the oinochoe the stroke Opoxapes can be read. Because this is a typical satyr name, it could be the name of the horse-tailed satyr shown on the back.

The back shows a satyr (Opoxapes?) facing to the right, who just leads a Kantharos with wine to his lips. In his left hand he holds a barbitos, a lyre. His long hair is tied to his neck and he wears a wreath. A carefully drawn ribbon of ivy leaves and bouquets of grapes shows up on the amphora neck above the depiction, which can also be found on the front. At the feet of the satyr there is a spiral-shaped design element, an extremely rare ornament in the attic-red-figure vase pictures.

The British archaeologist Sir John Beazley uses this oversized amphora to assign the painter his emergency name according to the location of this impressive work of art: Berlin painter.

The Berlin painter (active around 490-460 B.C.) is the common name of an Attic Greek vase painter who is widely regarded as a rival of the Cleopatra painter, one of the most talented vase painters of the early 5th century B.C.. More than 400 vases and fragments are attributed to the Berlin painter.

The Berlin painter and the Cleophrades painter were trained by an avant-gardist who introduced red figure painting.
