The figure of a harpist in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (NAMA, inventory number 3908) belongs to the group of so-called Cyclades idols and is dated between the 28th and 23rd centuries BC.
The sitting naked male figure of a harpist is one of the most famous works of the Cycladic culture and one of the oldest representations of a musician. The 22.5 cm high marble figure holds the frame harp supported on the right thigh with the right hand, while the left hand seems to reach for the strings. The harpist was found together with the statuette of an Aulos player - also available in my category Cyclades idols - in a tomb on the Cyclades island Keros.
