Seahorses are said to have been considered by fishermen in ancient times to be foals of Poseidon's carriage horses, or they were believed to be descended from mythical creatures on which the gods ride, horses with a fish tail.
 
The Hippocamp, the legendary animal with the horse's upper body and fish tail, can be found in Poseidon depictions from antiquity to modern times, or in connection with nereids and tritons, or other gods.
 
Hippokampen are also shown on various coins from Phoenicia, Greece, Asia Minor and Italy.
