The crowned Apollo gives a libation, Greek sponde ("donation").
Before drinking, it was customary to pour some of the drink as libatio on the earth. Apollon holds the Lyra, a seven-stringed musical instrument, consecrated to him in his left hand. Interesting about this Chelys, a special form of the lyre, the tortoise shell as resonance body at the lower part. Therefore, this instrument is also called turtle eggs. The feet of his armchair are worked as carnivore paws.
Inside of an Attic white-ground kylix, painted by the Pistoxenos painter, other attributions go to the Berliner painter and Onesimos, ca. 460 B. C. From a grave in Delphi.
Hand-painted replica with 23.8 cm slightly larger than the original with 18 cm. Museum of Delphi, Inv. -No. 8140, Hall XII.
A seal on the handle bears the inscription "MUSEUM COPY", reverse side "HAND MADE IN GREECE".
