Original Stamnos with runners, Archaeological Museum Athens
Those black-figure Stamnos,
a bulbous wine vessel with short neck and wide opening, with horizontal handles on the shoulders, comes from a pottery workshop in Athens.
As a tribute to their prudish Etruscan customers, the athletes were presented with a loincloth. In general, ancient Greek athletes are shown undressed in traditional representations at competitions.
Below the edge of the neck, men and women can be seen all around the symposium. The date is 480 BC.
Hand-painted replica reproduced in reduced size. A seal on the handle bears the inscription "MUSEUM COPY", on the back "HAND MADE IN GREECE".
