From the north side of the Siphnier treasure house in Delphi comes this frieze of Gigantomachia.
The giants were fearsome, mighty, often snakingly depicted giants of Greek mythology, produced by Gaia, the earth mother, from the drops of blood that fell on them during the emasculation of Uranus. The gigantomachy describes the battle of the Olympic gods against these monsters. The giants were banished to the ground by the gods after a lost battle.
The last picture above shows a key scene from this frieze. The lion from the chariot of the Kybele tears a giant to pieces, while Apollo and Artemis fight against the giant Kantharos.
The relief was made around 520 BC from Parian marble, original height 60 cm.
