Horse head from the carriage of the moon goddess Selene, east gable of the Parthenon, Acropolis
The centre of the eastern gable shows the birth of the goddess Athena from the head of Zeus, the father of the gods. In the left corner of the semi-plastic relief group, the sun god Helios ascends with his horse team from the dawn, while at the same time the moon goddess Selene with her horse-drawn carriage disappears behind the horizon in the opposite far right corner.
The horse's head was broken out of the Parthenon by Lord Elgin and sold with other exhibits to the British Museum (Elgin Marbles) in 1816, where it is still to this day.
