At the Panatheneae, the main festival of the city of Athens in honour of the city goddess, there was a special form of competition.
In individual competitions, four-man teams of four, i. e. quadriles with two occupants, one driver and a so-called Apobates, a competitor equipped with a battle helmet and shield, started. The rider had the task of jumping off during the ride and performing tasks, such as completing a sprint, for example, in order to then be taken up again in a full gallop.
Apobates motif relief, early 3rd century B.C., Acropolis site, original size 42 cm x 86 cm, exhibit of the Acropolis Museum under inventory no. 1326.
