This statuette of a woman represents a typical representative of the art movement that occurs almost exclusively in Boiotia.
The lady is wrapped in a floor-length robe, while on her head a circular, gyroscopic sun hat made of straw called Tholia is emblazoned. Tholias were attached to the headscarf with robe pins and often decorated with concentric circles of colour. With the painted fan in the shape of a leaf in her hand, also made of straw, she continues to fend off the sun and wave cooling down.
Often the tanagras were provided with a small opening on the back, just like these, from which hot gases could escape during the burning process. This prevented the figures from being torn apart.
