Omphalos Museum in Delphi
Omphalos, for ancient Greeks the navel (omphalos) of the world
This old cult monument was kept in Delphi, the oracle site, in the Cella, a temple interior, in which the cult picture was usually kept. It was dedicated to the god of prophecy, Apollo, consecrated to this place. According to the Greek understanding, there was also a "navel" for the sea. The omphalos was covered with wool garlands and was supposed to originate from a meteorite.
