This fresco in black-figure style
shows a scene from an agon, a chariot race. The leader of the four-horse quadriga holds the steering straps in his left hand and a long pole in the other hand to drive the horses individually.
The epoch of black-figure painting actually denotes vase motifs that began around 635 BC.
