The Argonautensage
The construction of the Argo is depicted on this relief. Argos, the builder of the ship, works the stern with hammer and chisel, while the goddess Athena raises the rigging and the 1st helmsman, Tiphys, holds the mast.
The 50 Argonauts are to leave to rob the Golden Fleece, the fur of an Aries, in Colchis at the Black Sea. This legend also reflects the ancient method of sinking a sheepskin in suitable places on gold-bearing rivers to capture the heavy gold dust and grains.
The original is a terracotta slab found near the Porta Latina in Rome. The relief is dated to the 1st century AD and measures 63.5 cm x 55.9 cm. Original at the British Museum in London, inventory no. 1805,0703.301.
