Original image of Erechtheion on the Acropolis
Caryatids were female figures dressed in ancient Greek art,
which served as a supporting figure instead of a column or other supporting element, such as a wooden support. The caryatids reappeared in the Renaissance.
The most famous caryatids were the trellis girders of the Erechtheion, built at the end of the 5th century BC, on the Acropolis, Athens' citadel. This sanctuary was dedicated to the mythological king of Athens, Erechtheus, who introduced the Athens Faculty.
The contact surface on the head of the caryatid is 9.7 cm in square.
