Ganymedes, German Ganymed, in the Greek legend most beautiful of the mortal, son of King Tros.
Abducted by Zeus to Mount Olympus to be a cupbearer for the gods. According to later versions, Zeus had him robbed by his eagle (or robbed him in the shape of an eagle) and made him his lover (motif of boy love).
The site of this half-life-size terracotta statue is the Heraion, the Hera temple in Olympia. It is attributed to the famous sculptor Praxiteles and was created in the 2nd half of the 4th century BC.
Exhibited in the Archaeological Museum Olympia. Replica reduction.
