The winged goddess of victory Nike, made of bronze, with the victory wreath in her right hand, replica original size, on black marble base
Nike Greek "victory," Hellenistic goddess who embodies victory,
at Hesiod daughter of Pallas and the Styx. She was usually winged and depicted with the victory wreath (lat. Victoria). In ancient Greece often minted on coins.
Among the most famous Nike depictions in free sculpture are the late classical Nike of Paionios in Olympia and the highly Hellenistic version of the Nike of Samothrace in the Louvre. The latter shows the goddess of victory in a triumphal ascent on the front part of a ship. The Roman depictions of Victoria are typologically mostly based on Greek models and establish a tradition that continues in post-antiquity, for example in the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Original in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, ca. 520 BC
